She subtly mixes folk, rock sounds and elements of her indigenous roots.

With committed lyrics, she is the first Mayan artist to stand out on the world stage. Currently, her songs are anthems in the demonstrations of indigenous communities. UN Women appointed her ambassador to spread messages against discrimination and in defense of gender equality in Central America.

Sara Curruchich’s 2024 “Indigenous Woman” world tour will feature two versions: Sara with 3 supporting musicians (marimba, drums, bass) and an acoustic version with talented Guatemalan guitarist Luis Juárez Quixtán. Both offer a deep immersion into the indigenous Mayan culture through a unique musical experience. Sara’s voice rediscovers the strength of Violeta Parra and Mercedes Sosa, but with the power, identity and contributions of an indigenous woman of the 21st century. Her songwriting demonstrates a deep connection with the history, memory and struggles of indigenous peoples.

On this tour, Sara performs her iconic songs in Kaqchikel and Spanish as a joyous defense in the fight against racism and in support of women’s rights. Through her compositions, she establishes a deep connection with the land and the Mayan worldview. Examples include “Pueblos”, a song that resonates with the struggle of indigenous peoples around the world, and “La Siguanaba”, a cry against the violence of the patriarchal system. “Daughter of the Earth” pays tribute to people who disappeared during the war in Guatemala, while “Amor Diverso” denounces hate crimes and embraces the LGBTI community with the love of Sara.

Through her songs, Sara Curruchich weaves stories of resistance and love, carrying a message that transcends borders and resonates with the diversity of human experiences. Her music is a call to action and a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural roots in an ever-changing world. With each note, Sara invites us to reflect, feel and be part of a movement that seeks justice, equality and connection with our land and roots.

In 2023, Sara and her band celebrated official showcases at SXSW and Folk Alliance, and launched their first North American tour from New York (BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!) to Colorado (Raizado), passing through Berkeley and Chicago (LatiNext). In Canada, they debuted at SunFest, in London, Ontario.

In 2024, they will continue to conquer Mexico, Canada (Calgary Folk and Innu Nikamu festivals) and the United States (including as Artist-in-Residence at the University of Virginia, and performances at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival). When Sara immerses herself in her songs with all her emotion, Luis accompanies each note with an experience that fascinates the audience. It is an experience where music becomes a dance between two passionate artists. This is how the two Mayan artists conquered the Indigenous Music Summit and the Montreal World Cup in 2023, establishing themselves as the artistic revelations of those editions. Participations like these lead Sara to be recognized with the Rising Tide Award from Folk Alliance International, which honors a new generation artist who inspires others.
